Evaluation Question 1 - Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

When I choose my genre for my music magazine I had no idea who else read Hip Hop and Rap magazines, other than myself. So to be able to find my audience I had to do some research. I recorded my research and put it into this video. The video shows me googling and gaining knowledge of exactly who my audience is. While researching, I managed to draw up this picture, which you can also see me creating in the video.

After finding out who actually reads Hip Hop and Rap magazines I needed to research theories which would help me construct my audience. Graeme Burton identified the difference between socially grouped audience, such as age, gender, place in society and media audiences, grouped by their relationship with the media, such as computer uses, film goers. Hartley expanded on Burton’s classification, he developed 7 subjective's. He believed if you applied them to your audience, you have identified a more specific audience and should offer motives appropriate to that audience. The more specific your audience, the more you can target them directly.

Hartley believed that an audience can be grouped by their aspirations.  So my audience will be aspiring to break the stereotypes of what the general public assume rap listeners look or act like. As my magazine has an audience of young people, they will be aspiring to hopefully reach their dreams and complete school.

I want to be able to encourage my young audience so I have included stories of artists who have experienced hardship and came out on the other side brighter, hopefully this will inspire your audience. My audience could also be aspiring rappers themselves, therefore my readers will share the same goal and hopefully encourage each other.

Hartley also believed there are associated motives depending on gender. We traditionally offer different gains to these audiences, or use different methods of targeting them.
